Libya floods: Rescuers search through ruins for survivors
Rescue workers were burying thousands of victims of devastating floods in eastern Libya in mass graves as they struggled to cope with the scale of the disaster that has claimed at least 5,500 lives. As emergency workers arrived and began sifting through the rubble residents continued the search for relatives, lifting the blankets covering dozens of corpses that had been dragged out into the streets. The storm hit the region on Sunday evening, bringing at least 8in of rain. Derna was devastated when a dam system on the nearby River Derna collapsed. The resulting flash flood washed away up to a quarter of the city, which has a population of about 90,000.
