Boris Johnson is on Wednesday expected to order a crackdown on MPs’ second jobs that have opened up a new rift in an increasingly fractious Tory Party. Prime minister’s questions at midday is followed by a Commons vote this afternoon on his plan to ban outside consultancy work, a perfectly timed liaison committee hearing to discuss “propriety and ethics in government,” before a relaxing evening in front of the 1922 committee of Conservative backbenchers, where dozens of part-time politicians will be raging about the PM leaving them out of pocket. Downing Street moved after Labour threatened to use an opposition day debate on Wednesday to force the Tories to whip in favour of MPs having second jobs. Labour leader Keir Starmer went on a victory lap last night, telling reporters: “Be under no illusion, the prime minister’s only done this U-turn because his back was against the wall, because we, the Labour Party, have put down a binding vote for tomorrow.
