Boris Johnson faces a seismic 24 hours after the 2019 intake of Conservative MPs who rode the red wall wave to win their seats at the last election launched a plot to remove him from Downing Street. A group of around 20 newbie Tory MPs are at the centre of efforts to organize no-confidence letters that would trigger a vote on the prime minister’s future. Boris Johnson held a series of meetings with MPs last night, preparing an announcement this afternoon that “Plan B” COVID restrictions will be scrapped. As this email goes out, the situation is volatile and unpredictable. It is plausible that the threshold of 54 no-confidence letters is reached imminently, with a vote held soon after.
