Liz Truss defends mini-budget: 'We had to act on energy bills'

Breaking news - Liz Truss has said there are “plenty of areas where the government can become more efficient" as she appeared to confirm Whitehall departments have been told to find new savings. The Treasury has already confirmed that the current spending review will not be re-opened. That means departments will have to stick to existing spending limits despite surging inflation eroding the real terms value of their funding settlements. There were recently reports that departments are being told to draw up plans for fresh efficiency savings in order to reduce future government borrowing.
