Sinn Fein has reportedly overtaken the Democratic Unionist party (DUP), and is said to be on track to see its deputy leader Michelle O’Neill become first minister – according to polling expert Sir John Curtice.
Labour has opened up the biggest lead over the Tories in any local elections since 2012, he also said. Prof Curtice calculated that – if the whole country had been voting in the elections yesterday – Labour would have gained 35 per cent of the vote.
This scenario would put Labour five points ahead of the Conservatives, which would be on 30 per cent.
