Around 100 underground passengers and staff were evacuated as crews in six fire engines rushed to tackle the incident at around 11.30am. The firefighters were called after huge plumes of smoke were spotted coming from an electrical room within the basement of the station. No trains have been stopping at the station, which is the nearest to the Prime Minister's office on Downing Street and the Houses of Parliament. The fire was brought under control by 12.49pm as fire chiefs said the cause of the smoke will be investigated. It comes after flooding caused severe delays on the tube this morning, including on the Circle and District Lines which serve Westminster.
