The government's new childcare policy starts today, but concerns arise about funding and staffing shortages. Eligible parents of two-year-olds will now get 15 hours of funded childcare weekly as part of an £8 billion initiative from the 2023 budget, aiming to save working parents £3,450 yearly and stimulate the economy. While parents approve, providers and opposition voices worry as Labour notes over 1,000 childcare spots were lost from March to December 2023 despite higher demand. The Early Years Alliance warns of service struggles, possibly leading to fee increases. Changes from April 1, kick off a phased rollout, aiming to extend free childcare to all working parents with children aged nine months and older by September this year and to 30 hours weekly a year later.
