Britain warned Beijing on Monday that there was “absolutely no excuse” for a BBC journalist covering mass protests in China to allegedly be beaten by the police. Business Secretary Grant Shapps told of the Government’s “considerable concern” after the BBC said journalist Ed Lawrence was “arrested, handcuffed, beaten and kicked” by the security forces in Shanghai, during a protest against the country’s strict Covid-19 restrictions. Mr Shapps told Sky News: “There can be absolutely no excuse whatsoever for a journalist who was simply covering the protests going on for being beaten by the police. That’s a considerable concern.” Earlier the corporation had issued a statement condemning the behaviour by Chinese police.
