Storm Debi leaves 100,000 Irish homes and businesses without power as high winds cause havoc

Severe gales caused power cuts across the island of Ireland, with around 100,000 homes and businesses left without electricity as Storm Debi blew in. Gusts of over 70mph have been recorded across the UK, with an amber weather warning for wind – meaning buildings could be damaged and travel disruption was likely – remaining in place on Monday afternoon for North West England. An Irish postwoman in County Limerick was hit by flying debris but not badly hurt, while, trees were brought down across the country causing problems on the roads. Gusts of 77mph were recorded in Gwynedd, 74mph at Killowen in Northern Ireland and 68mph on the Isle of Man as the low pressure system moved across the Irish Sea. Yellow warnings for rain were also in place across part of North East Scotland, including Aberdeenshire, Angus and Moray.
