Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has resigned as leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) immediately after being charged with historical sexual offences. The DUP released a statement confirming Donaldson's resignation, stating that they received a letter from him indicating his decision to step down. As per party rules, Donaldson has been suspended from membership pending the outcome of the legal process. Gavin Robinson MP has been appointed as the interim leader of the party unanimously by party officers. Donaldson has been the leader of the DUP since 2021 and has served as the MP for Lagan Valley since 1997. Before joining the DUP, he was part of the Ulster Unionist Party's delegation involved in negotiating the Good Friday Peace agreement.
