Zelensky names Ukraine’s new army chief after removing Zaluzhny

President Zelensky has appointed General Oleksandr Syrsky to replace Valery Zaluzhny as Ukraine’s new army chief, in a dramatic military shake-up. “Met with General Valery Zaluzhny. Thanked him for two years of protection of Ukraine,” Zelensky posted on his Telegram channel. “We discussed what kind of renewal the armed forces of Ukraine need. We also discussed who could be in the updated leadership of our armed forces of Ukraine. The time for such an update is now.” Syrsky, 58, was the commander of Ukraine’s ground forces and since 2013 has been involved in the Ukrainian army’s effort to adopt Nato standards.
