Adam Collin felt Paul Warne was always destined for a big job in the Football League and says Derby County's squad will love playing for him.

The Rams are set to appoint the Rotherham boss as their new manager after striking a deal with the Millers yesterday. The move comes after Liam Rosenior was told he was no longer in charge as interim boss although he currently remains on the staff at Pride Park.

Warne's reputation has risen considerably in light of his track record at the New York stadium having led the club to promotion from League One on three occasions. He will inherit a Derby squad that is currently seventh in the table and Collin, who played under Warne at the Millers, believes Derby's players will appreciate his character.

"First and foremost he is a great guy and one of the best I know in football," said Collin who is Head of Academy Goalkeeping at Mansfield Town. "He's honest, he will tell you how it is even if you don't like what he says at times. But players appreciate that. He's approachable which is so important as a manager.

"There are some that you come across that aren't, but he will get the best out of the players, I've no doubt about that. At Rotherham I played under Steve Evans which could be quite tough at times, but Paul united the dressing room and kept everybody together.

"When I retired, he sent me a message personally to say thank you for the service I gave to Rotherham. He's just a really good guy and a brilliant manager."

Warne led the Millers to promotion to the Championship last season and also banked the EFL Trophy having beaten Sutton United at Wembley. This season Rotherham are currently eighth in the second tier having won three, drawn five and lost once in their opening nine games. Warne's style of football has often been described as direct, but that has not been the case in the Championship this season.

"He gets unfairly tarnished with that direct tag," Collin continued. "They've got the ball down and played out from the back this season and when they get the ball into the middle third and final third, they've played some really good technical stuff.

"And when you think that Rotherham has such a low budget for that division, to be in the top 10 is unbelievable. He didn't want to just survive in the Championship with Rotherham, he wanted them to go forward and he's done that.

"That just shows what a good job he has done. He's one of those managers that you will want to run through a brick wall for. He will make you work hard and I know that he had players running 5km at 5.30am and 6.30am in pre-season and there were no grumbles about it.

"He wanted the players to be fitter than everybody else in the Championship and they are. That brings success which as a player that's you want. I always thought he would get a big opportunity purely because of the character he is and I am sure the Derby dressing room will love playing for him."
