Politics latest news: Angela Rayner refuses to reveal tax advice over sale of council house

Angela Rayner has refused to give a commitment to publish the tax advice she received in relation to the sale of her house.

Greater Manchester Police said yesterday that it was looking again at claims that the Labour deputy leader broke electoral law over the sale of the property.

It was suggested to Ms Rayner during an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that she could clear up any and all questions about the row by publishing any advice she had received on the sale.

Asked why she would not release the advice to the public, she said: “Because I don’t need to publish all of my details. My child’s birth certificate was put out in the public domain and it is not fair on my family for that information to be out there. I have got that information. I will give it to the police, I will give to the HMRC.”

Pushed again on why she would not publish the tax advice, Ms Rayner said: “Because that is my personal tax advice but I am happy to comply with the necessary authorities that want to see that.

“But I don’t think we are going down the road of MPs, whenever somebody says ‘well what is happening with your capital gains tax, we want to see all the information and detail’.

“If we are, I am happy. If we are all going to have a level playing field… you show me yours and I’ll show you mine.”

Ms Rayner said previously the row was “manufactured” in an attempt to “smear” her and said she had done nothing wrong.
