Donald Trump said he was “proud to be here” before he headed into a Manhattan courthouse as he became the first US President to stand criminal trial over alleged hush money payments. He told reporters before the trial started: “Nobody’s ever seen anything like it… it’s a case that should never have been brought, it’s an assault on America. “And that’s why I’m very proud to be here. This is an assault on our country. And it’s a country that’s failing. “It’s a country that’s run by an incompetent man who’s very much involved in this case. This is very much an attack on a political opponent, that’s all this is.” Mr Trump has been charged with falsifying business records ahead of the 2016 election to cover up a $130,000 payment made to stop Stormy Daniels, an adult film star, talking about their alleged affair. He has pleaded not guilty and denied the affair.
