'How shameful,' says Yvette Cooper on Patel's Rwanda plan
Priti Patel has said the UK will not back down from its policy to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda despite the policy being met with strong opposition and legal battles. The first flight to begin deporting people from the UK to Kigali was cancelled after the European court of human rights issued an interim measure. The prime minister's spokesperson said Downing Street is even prepared to withdraw from the European convention, to ensure the flights can go ahead. The home secretary also criticised the court insisting the government would press ahead with its plans. 'Preparation for our next flights, and future flights have already begun,' Patel told parliament. The shadow home secretary, Yvette Cooper, said Priti Patel only has herself to blame for a plan she described as 'shameful'.
