Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss make pitches to party members as they bid to be next Tory leader and PM

Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss have appeared in front of party members at hustings in Leeds in their bid to become the next Tory leader. Mr. Sunak explained why he hasn't been offering the same immediate tax cuts as his rival. "I haven't taken the easy road - there are plenty of things I could have said that would have made my life easy," he said. Mr Sunak said it is the "honest thing to do" to tell people as it is and "that's what leadership is about". He said he won't "embark on a spree" of "unfunded promises" but that he will cut taxes when the time is right. Ms Truss drew the loudest applause when she pledged to get the Northern Powerhouse rail built, saying Leeds is the "largest city in Europe without its own metro system". She was also acknowledged by the audience when she vowed to stand up to Russia's Vladimir Putin, and when she said that a "woman is a woman".
