Chelsea's Christian Pulisic demand could drive suitors away with Man Utd keen

Manchester United have emerged as shock suitors for Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic - but any deal between the two clubs could prove difficult to arrange.

The Red Devils are in freefall at the moment after two defeats from their opening two Premier League games this term and are desperately searching for transfer targets to bolster their struggling squad. Erik ten Hag has identified Pulisic as someone who he feels could change the Red Devils' attacking fortunes.

As things stand, United have notched just one goal but have shipped six. Pulisic on loan is viewed as a perfect short-term solution, but things aren't exactly that simple. Chelsea have little interest in sanctioning the American's exit on a temporary basis.

The 23-year-old cost the Blues £58million back in 2019 when they purchased him from Bundesliga titans Borussia Dortmund. The west London outfit are aiming to recoup every penny they originally spent on Pulisic and for that reason, the club's new owner Todd Boehly favours a permanent exit for the United States international.

This could prove to be quite the stumbling block in any deal, with United aiming to avoid any kind of transfer fee for Pulisic let alone just shy of £60m.

As for the player himself, Pulisic is thought to be keen. Comments made by the winger from his Dortmund days have since resurfaced which show he has long had an affection for the Red Devils.

Back in 2017, the winger confessed he harboured a lot of admiration for United and more specifically one club legend. "I was a big Manchester United fan when I was younger," Pulisic told ESPN. "I loved to watch Rooney. I wouldn't say I'm a similar player, though.

"I think his passion for the game is something you don't see much in players. That's what I loved about him." The comments are more than likely to endear him to any section of the United faithful that perhaps weren't entirely sure about the American as a target.

Pulisic has struggled for game time since Blues boss Thomas Tuchel arrived at the beginning of last year and his patience when it comes to sitting on the bench is starting to wear thin.

It is for that reason that Pulisic is in favour of a move to Manchester, but whether United are willing to fork out that kind of fee for the wide-man remains to be seen. Ten Hag was unwilling to pay a similar figure for Ajax star Antony - a player he knows all too well from their shared time in Amsterdam.
