Rotherham's Championship match against Birmingham was delayed for around 30 minutes due to medical emergency in the crowd at the New York Stadium.

Play was stopped after eight minutes with the score at 0-0 and the referee, Keith Stroud, then took both sides off the pitch and into the dressing room. Rotherham tweeted an update at 3.30pm which read: "The supporter has now left the stadium with medical professionals.

"We would like to thank everyone for their compassion and patience and it goes without saying that all our love and thoughts are with the casualty. We would ask that the supporter's privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time."

Birmingham added in a post: "We would like to thank everyone for their compassion and patience. We send all our best wishes to those involved."

The match restarted at around 3.45pm with the score at 0-0 after both teams had been given time to warm up. The crowd gave a rousing round of applause for the medical professionals, police and security workers who dealt with the incident in the stands.

"We cannot put into words our gratitude to the paramedics, medical professionals and both sets of supporters for the incredibly compassionate way in which such a difficult situation has been handled," Rotherham added in another tweet. "Sincerely, from every single one of us at Rotherham United, thank you."

Rotherham sit bottom of the table and have already been relegated from the Championship, while Birmingham are in 21st place, a point above Huddersfield in the final relegation spot. The match was still tied at 0-0 when the half-time whistle blew as the other 3pm kick-offs neared their conclusions.
