Manchester United may be left ruing not increasing their spending spree over the summer and completing their much-needed major overhaul. Instead, they lack depth in the final third and top target Cody Gakpo’s value is soaring.
The forward was on the score sheet again at the Qatar World Cup on Friday evening, smashing a fierce strike into the top corner after just six minutes against Ecuador. Gakpo was a constant threat for Louis van Gaal’s side, always looking capable of creating an opportunity when fed the ball.
That will be music to the ears of United fans, who have been heavily linked with the 23-year-old. The versatile forward reportedly held talks with United over the summer and is a player that Erik ten Hag was particularly keen on, but the move did not materialise.
Their pursuit of Gakpo was put on pause by United in favour of pursuing Antony from Ajax, which set the club back approximately £85million, with acquiring a right-winger a priority. The Brazil international is adjusting to life in the Premier League, and he could be joined by a fellow former Eredivisie star in January if Gakpo is not now unattainable.
