Israel has attacked Iran's allies and assets throughout the war in the Middle East, in Lebanon and Syria, but so far Tehran has stopped short of retaliating. However, a suspected Israeli attack on what Iran regards as sovereign diplomatic territory - its embassy in Damascus - on 1 April is different, and the nation's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, has stated that Israel must be punished.
