A major review has revealed that there is 'remarkably weak evidence' to support gender treatments for children. Dr Hilary Cass, who chaired the Independent Review of Gender Identity Services for children and young people, said the pillars of gender medicine are “built on shaky foundations,” as evidence was found to be severely lacking on the impacts of puberty blockers and hormone treatments. Dr Cass also urged that healthcare for people questioning their gender “needs to be improved across the board,” stating that there is a distinction between having a trans identity and medically transitioning. Dr Cass added: “Many people with gender-diverse identities don’t want to go down a medical pathway” but will still be in need of support. The review lays out 32 recommendations on how to ensure youngsters who are confused about their gender get a standard of care that is “safe, holistic and effective”. TalkTV’s Vanessa Feltz is joined by journalist and presenter Shivani Dave and political correspondent Alicia Fitzgerald to discuss the findings.
